Limpopo province is the most northern province in South Africa, bordering the countries of Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana. It’s named after the Limpopo River, which marks the northern border. With a modest population of almost 6.5 million people, Limpopo is a mostly rural province known for its bushveld and wildlife reserves, and this is where you will also find the world’s largest Baobab tree. It houses the largest part of Kruger National Park and it is home to over 50 reserves and Mapungubwe National Park, which was one of the largest ancient civilizations. Mapungubwe is also thought to be the first civilization to have a social class system. West of the Kruger National Park are the craggy Blouberg mountains and Makgabeng Plateau with ancient rock art.
The capital city is Polokwane, which boasts easy access to the province’s plentiful game reserves. The Arend Dieperink Museum and fossil-rich caves of Makapansgat can be found near the city for those wishing to explore the rich history dating back to early hominids.
